Life at home…
Life is pushing and pulling me in ways I never expected. I’m busy helping my family. My mother is in her late 80’s in assisted living in a wheelchair. She’s never needed me before, but I’m at a good place to be able to help her. At the same time I’ve never had the chance to just enjoy her company as much as I do now. Our son, who graduated High School at the height and depth of the Pandemic, and has since completed 2 years of college in his bedroom. He’s getting ready to transfer away from home to a 4 year university. My wife’s mother and business partner is in her 80’s and still wanting to work full time (even if it may be better for her to retire). When my partner gets home from her 6-day-a-week job, I try to make our home a clean and welcoming place.
Life at large…
The world is being pulled and pushed into corners of tragedy and moments of courage and humanity. As if the pandemic were not enough, our former president is trying to tear our country into pieces with lies and violence and hate. Putin has invaded Ukraine, a country that is finally, after decades of repression, beginning to see its way to independence and freedom. Our planet is melting and burning and drowning all at the same time. Amid the flood of bad news, I cling to stories of people who stand up, who endure, who care. They give me strength.
The Beat Goes On…
I continue to write music throughout these times. There is no message I’m trying to convey, it’s just music that comes to me, or through me. I wrote “Push Pull” before the invasion of Ukraine, but I began the animation shortly after Russia attacked. Starting with the colors of the Ukrainian flag, and the huge struggle going on in their country, I got the idea of the colors working with and against each other. The complicated feelings of those who flee for safety, or stay to fight, or are attacked in their own homes and towns, are what inspire the video.
