A Song I Love

As a young boy, my tastes in music tended toward the dark and masculine - when it was songtime in school, the only ones I deigned to sing were "Volga Boatmen" or "15 miles on the Erie Canal". (Gee...maybe I just liked songs about riverboats?)

But there were a couple songs of a sweeter nature that I secretly enjoyed. This is one of them. I never could grasp the lyrics, though...How do deer and antelope play? And how often does one have to deal with discouraging words, anyway?

Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam
Where the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day

Home, home on the range
Where the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day

Where the air is so pure, the zephyrs so free
The breezes so balmy and light
That I would not exchange my home on the range
For all of the cities so bright

Home, home on the range
Where the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day

lyrics by Brewster Higley, music by Daniel Kelley
